What is Antifreeze?

What is Antifreeze Used For?

So, what is antifreeze used for? It actually serves two purposes. One, it keeps the coolant in your car from freezing during our cold Blasdell area winters, which can get very cold. And, two, it keeps your car from overheating, which is just as important. This fluid is composed of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. It comes in one of three colors: orange, pink, or green. It’s very important that you fill your car’s coolant system with the right color, so check your owner’s manual before putting any antifreeze in your car. 

Why is Antifreeze Important?

Why is antifreeze important? Either freezing or overheating could seriously damage your car’s engine, maybe beyond repair. So, it plays a vital role in maintaining the health of your car. The last thing you want is for ice to form inside your engine. On the other hand, an engine that overheats and incurs damage that would require the entire engine to be replaced. 

Is Antifreeze Coolant?

Some use the terms antifreeze and coolant interchangeably. Is an antifreeze coolant. A mixture of antifreeze and water can in fact act as a coolant. That’s why the antifreeze you find on the shelf in auto parts stores often comes premixed with an exact percentage of both antifreeze and water. Pure, unmixed antifreeze should never be poured into a radiator, even during the cold temperatures we experience in this part of the country. Check your owner’s manual for the mix that is right for your car.
