How to Check Your Transmission Fluid at Home

Once you learn how to check transmission fluid, you’ll realize how easy this maintenance step is. For our DIY West Seneca readers, below you’ll find the simple steps on how to check transmission fluid:

  1. Turn on the engine to warm it up.
  2. Find your transmission fluid dipstick. For Buffalo drivers with front-wheel drive, yours is located to the right of the oil dipstick. Double check your owner’s manual.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid. Slowly rub it between your fingers. Check if the fluid appears dirty or smells burnt. It should be clear with a pink hue.
  4. Use a rag to clean the dipstick then put it back in its location. Remove the dipstick one last time and check the fluid level. You don’t want it to overfill the fluid, but you don’t want it to not be all the way full. Add more fluid if you need to.
  5. To avoid overfill, utilize a funnel to reach the appropriate fluid level.
